Where will you plant?

What soil is on your site?
Select the soil order at your planting site. If you clicked the map at step 1 this is already set from the national soil map at that point — change it if you know better. Not sure? Look it up on the Landcare soil map, read about the soil orders, or see the summary table in the user guide.

How wet is the ground?
Pick the typical moisture condition of the soil for most of the year. Sites that span wet and dry ground are best searched one band at a time — why, in the user guide.

How much frost does the site get?
If you clicked the map at step 1 this is already set from NIWA’s frost maps for that point; it counts air frosts, so answer harder if your site is a hollow. Frost decides more plantings than almost anything else — a frost-tender species put out on a cold flat is killed in its first winter. Pick the worst frost your site normally sees, not the average. Cold air runs downhill. A valley floor, a hollow, or the flat ground behind a solid fence or shelterbelt collects cold air and frosts far harder than the slope just above it. If your site is one of those, answer for the hollow, not for the district.
